The Republic of Cyprus is a member of the European Union and any citizen of another European Union or European Economic Area (including Switzerland, Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway) have the same residency rights as a Cypriot resident. Non-EU and non-EEA citizens must comply with different requirements for obtaining temporary or permanent residency in Cyprus.
When working in Cyprus, both the employer and the employee must be informed regarding the legislation for employing EU and non-EU nationals. Our Cypriot company formation experts are ready to assist you if you want to obtain a residency permit in Cyprus.

Residence permits for EU nationals in Cyprus

EU citizens in Cyprus are entitled to the same employment and social insurance rights as a Cypriot national and do not require a special visa to enter the country. They can enter Cyprus using a valid passport or ID card. However, if they intend to work and stay in Cyprus for longer than three months, an EU citizen must apply for a Registration Certificate.
There are several steps for an EU national who wants to work in Cyprus and the first step is obtaining an Alien Registration Card from the local Immigration Office within eight days after arriving in Cyprus. The application for the Registration Certificate must be made within three months after arriving in Cyprus. The individual can apply for the two documents at the same time. The final steps consist of applying for a social employment number and opening a personal bank account in Cyprus.
Residency permits for employment in Cyprus have a validity period of five years. Our company incorporation consultants in Cyprus can give you detailed information about the documents necessary for applying for the Registration Certificate.

Residence permits for non-EU citizens in Cyprus

Non-EU and non-EEA nationals can apply for a temporary or a permanent residency permit in Cyprus. The temporary residency and employment permit is obtained from the Civil Registry and Migration Department and it is usually issued for one or two years. The permit is cancelled if the holder leaves the country for more than three continuous months. Individuals who wish to apply for such a permit must have an employment contract concluded with a Cypriot company and must comply with the regulation for a minimum annual salary.
Permanent residence in Cyprus can be obtained by applying for an Immigration Permit. These types of permits fall into five categories and the individual applying for such a permit must be able to prove that he/she and their families have stayed in Cyprus for five years and are self-sufficient.
